Want your account and data deleted? See how to delete your Narra account.
This policy explains what Narra collects, why, who helps us handle it, and the choices you have. Inkbound Studios (“we”, “us”), the company that operates the Narra app and narraread.com, is the controller responsible for your personal data. Contact: support@narraread.com.
1. What we collect
Account details: your email address, display name, and your password (stored only in scrambled, hashed form), plus your basic Google profile (name and email) if you use Google sign-in where it is offered, and a record of when you accepted these terms and confirmed your age. Reading activity: stories you open, chapters read and where you stopped, your library, favourites, bookmarks and ratings. Preferences: genres, pacing, romance level, content exclusions and the other reading preferences you choose, and what we learn from them about stories you might like. Things you write: notes, comments, choices and proposals on story paths, your profile, and stories you create. Balances: your Coins and Ores and how they change. Security and device data: sign-in sessions (when each started and was last active, and the device and browser type, such as “Mac” and “Chrome”), and a scrambled form of your IP address and browser type, used to keep your account safe and to stop abuse. Messages you send us, for example to support.
2. What stays on your device
Settings such as theme, text size and other accessibility and reading-display options are saved in your browser on this device, not on our servers. Clearing your browser data resets them.
3. Why we use it
To run your account and sign you in; to write, continue and personalise stories for you; to remember your place and library across devices; to run shared paths, where choices from many readers shape what happens; to recommend stories; to keep Narra safe, check content and prevent fraud and abuse; to send account emails such as verifying your address and resetting your password; to answer you when you contact us; and to understand, in aggregate, how Narra is used so we can improve it. Our usage records are built to leave out story text, notes, emails and passwords.
4. Our legal bases
We use your data to provide the service you signed up for (performance of a contract); for our legitimate interests in keeping Narra safe, fixing problems and improving stories, balanced against your rights; to meet legal obligations; and with your consent where we ask for it, which you can withdraw at any time.
5. Cookies and sessions
We use a small number of essential cookies: one keeps you signed in, and a security token protects your account from forged requests. They are required for Narra to work and are not used for advertising. We don’t use advertising cookies, and we don’t sell your personal data or share it for targeted advertising.
6. Who helps us
We share data only with service providers that help us run Narra, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only for us: hosting and database providers (Narra runs on Microsoft Azure); an email delivery provider, for account emails; Google, if you choose Google sign-in; service providers that help write and check stories, which receive only what a story needs, such as your story preferences, choices and notes, and never your password or payment details; and, once payments are switched on, a payment provider, which handles card details itself so we never see your full card number. We may also share data if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or sale of Narra, with notice to you.
7. International transfers
Narra is used around the world, so your data may be stored and processed in countries other than the one you live in, including by the providers above. When it is, we use the safeguards required by the data protection laws that apply to you, such as the GDPR and UK GDPR, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, and US state privacy laws such as the CCPA/CPRA, for example contractual protections like standard contractual clauses.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your account data while your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except what we must keep by law or to resolve disputes and prevent abuse, for example payment records. Backups are cleared on a rolling basis after that. Sign-in sessions expire on their own, and you can sign out any device from Settings → Privacy & data. Password-reset and verification links expire shortly after they are sent. Stories and paths other readers are reading may keep anonymous traces of choices you made.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, data protection laws (such as the GDPR and UK GDPR, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, and US state privacy laws such as the CCPA/CPRA) give you rights over your data. As your local law provides, you can ask to: see a copy of your data; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to how we use it; receive your data in a portable format; and withdraw consent at any time. Email support@narraread.com from the address on your account and we’ll respond within 30 days, or sooner if your local law requires. We may need to confirm it’s you. If you’re unhappy with our answer, you can complain to your local data protection authority.
10. Children
Narra is not for children under 13, or under 16 in countries whose law sets 16 as the minimum age, and we don’t knowingly collect their data. We ask every reader to confirm their age when they create an account. Readers aged 13 to 17 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to use Narra. If you believe a child under the minimum age, or a minor without permission, has given us personal data, email us and we will delete it.
11. Security
We protect your data with measures such as encrypted connections, hashed passwords, secure sign-in cookies and limits on sign-in attempts. No service is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
12. Changes
We’ll update this policy as Narra changes and show the effective date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
